Kanatal is a small village and a hill station in the state of Uttarakhand. Kanatal is 78 km from state capital Dehradun, 38 km from Mussoorie and 12 km from chamba. History of Kanatal

The history of being named Kanatal is very interesting; once upon a time there was a lake or tal (pond). When it was dried up, people started calling it kanatal. Kanna means sukha (dry) and Tal means lake, Indian usually uses the word kaana for dry well or pond in Hindi language.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Kanatal is from April to October. It obtains snow from December to February. The climate of Kanatal ranges between 10-20 degrees Celsius during summer and 5-10 degrees Celsius during winter. The location experiences heavy snowfall blocking roads in winters. Due to high altitude, Kanatal faces unexpected high winds.

Eco Park in Dhanaulti is a newly developed park by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) and citizens of Dhanaulti, it is situated in main Dhanaulti near main market and Forest rest house. It is surrounded by Oak, Deodar & Rhododendron trees. It is the best place for picnic with family and friends, kids also came here for school picnic there are many swings available for children. This eco-park is one of the best picnic spots. This eco park gives poor people of Dhanaulti a chance of employment. They sell Maggie, corn, ice- cream and many snacks outsides the park. Tourists came and enjoy all the variety of snacks in the park. The entry fee is Rs 15/- for adults and Rs 10/- for children. Park is worth to visit if you are planning for Dhanaulti or if you are a nature lover.

Kaudia forest is a very beautiful picnic spot and it is popular for hiking in Kanatal. A 6km walk in dense forests will give you the spectacular view of hills and valleys. 4. Surkanda Devi Temple

Surkanda Devi temple is a famous pilgrim place locted near Kaddukhal, it is 24 kms from the town Chamba and 40 kms from Mussoorie. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth located all over India and is dedicated to Goddess Surkanda. The temple is famous for its beauty and location. It is the place where the head of Sati had fallen after Shiva carried her on his trishool from Kankhal, Haridwar after she set herself of fire. It is an altitude of 2700 meters and gives 360 degree view of the surroundings along with the snowy Himalayan peaks. According to Legends, Surkanda Devi temple is refers to Goddess Sati, wife of Lord Shiva who burns herself in her father Daksha’s sacrifice when he embarrassed Shiva by not inviting the couple to the Yajna. Because of Sati death, Shiva performed tandav. All the Gods requested Lord Vishnu to stop Shiva. Lord Vishnu uses his Sudarshana to destroy the corpse of Sati and pieces of her body fell all over the region, which are known as Shakti Peeths. This is one of the Shakti Peeth of Goddess Sati. Devotees and visitors of temple can be reached by 2 km uphill trekking from Kaddukhal , which is the nearest town from Chamba and Mussoorie.
