Origin and history of the International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh

The Rishikesh International Yoga Festival was initially promoted by Uttar Pradesh tourism, during which time the state of Uttarakhand was not formed. It took place in the first week of February at Hotel Ganga Kinare, and the festival has been going on for years since.

In 1999, the Uttar Pradesh government approached the Parmarth Niketan Ashram to organize the ashram festival. Participants were still in other hotels, but their classes and events took place at the venue.

The International Yoga Festival started in 1999 at Rishikesh in the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. The initial meditation classes were conducted under the guidance of Poojya Sri Swami Veda Bharat Ji, and Yogacharya Sri Bharat Bhushan Ji taught the yoga asanas.

Since its inception, there has been looking back. The popularity of yoga festival is increasing every year. The 2010 edition became the most successful event, with the maximum number of people attending. The celebration of the festival’s success coincides with the auspicious occasion of the Great Kumbh Mela held at the same time of the year.
